Flora and Fauna

Along Raven-Lest's coast, the familiar world of grasses, birds, fish and mosses takes on local names. The plants of the hills differ from those on the quays, while animals follow water, food and the shelter offered by ordinary buildings and Houses. No single observer knows every habitat.

Habitats and Seasons

Salt wind reaches the open quays first, leaving sheltered stairs to ferns, mosses and insects. Farther inland, cultivated plots and hedges give way to thin stony soil around the quarries. During the four dolniks, autumn rains fill drains and spring runoff sends crews back to the steps.

Knowledge and Misread Signs

At the quay, fishers compare catches with the changing salt in the water. Gardeners keep their own accounts of shade, drainage and the plants that return after a wall is repaired, while kiln-workers know what first grows on disturbed clay. Few of these observations travel far without changing. A House may preserve the rhythm of repeated work, but a fisher who has never watched a seasonal fish run cannot learn it merely from another person's remembered gestures. So the old saying about birds leaving before Cooling persists alongside more prosaic explanations.
