Line and inheritance concerns situations in which a House’s measure passes on or changes: through an inner name, return after an absence, marriage, admission to a House, and the joining of several Houses. The section examines not a person’s origins, but the consequences of different ways of continuing the bond.
What actually passes on
When a line continues, the new person does not receive a ready-made set of memories. The House passes on distinctions: which door is considered an inner door, which promise is considered fulfilled, which recurrence is recognized as a return. Particular scenes and names may be forgotten while the measure between them continues to operate.
In the House of the Three Window Frames, no one remembered the woman for whose sake the northern window had been kept closed until noon. The custom survived four generations and became part of the inner order. When a new resident opened the window in the morning, the House responded not with an image or a name, but by making three neighbouring doors cease to distinguish entrance from exit.
The Corrector restored not the woman’s biography, but the function of the prohibition: the morning light had once served as the signal that the night watch was over. After the residents introduced a new signal for the end of the watch, the window remained open and the distinctions between the doors returned. The line continued through a change of form, not through literal preservation of the custom.
What is not inherited
The line does not pass on a complete set of memories, the character of one’s ancestors, or ownership of every object. A new participant receives the measure behind decisions, but may not know its origin. An attempt to reconstruct a biography from a single response by the House creates a false inheritance: a similar reaction is taken as evidence of a shared life.
Continuation through change
Preserving the line does not mean repeating its former form. Sometimes continuation takes the form of abandoning an old rule when the circumstances for which it existed have disappeared. The House recognizes the change as part of the line when it retains not only the new response, but also the reason for rejecting the old one. Mere cancellation without memory appears to it as a rupture.
