Relief is the controlled easing of excess strain in the House, in which part of what has accumulated is carried outside without severing connections or erasing memory. It is used when what the House holds has become too dense, but the House can still distinguish its own from what is foreign. Relief may harm a healthy House just as its absence may harm an ailing one.
When the House Can No Longer Cope
The need for relief is judged from a combination of signs: doors delay ordinary movements, conversation returns in neighbouring rooms, and small rearrangements provoke a disproportionate response. A single symptom is not enough; Shift and an error of access are ruled out first.
Relief was begun when the house could no longer cope, and never before, for relieving a healthy house was considered as dangerous as failing to relieve an ailing one; and they went quietly from room to room, opened the windows only partway, moved benches by a hand’s breadth rather than an elbow’s, and spoke in low voices in those days, because anything said loudly then would return to the house with greater weight than usual, and the work of many days could be undone by one careless word at the evening table.
Small Outlets
The work begins with reversible actions: a window is opened slightly, a cold passage is cleared, the path of water is changed, or one object without a line is carried outside. Then they wait for the House to show which connection it is ready to release. Open Space receives the departing strain, but must not become a dumping ground for memory.
The Corrector is responsible for the material path, and the Master of the Wind for the movement of air and sound. Sometimes one craft is enough; joint work is needed when the House returns what was released through another circle. In that case, relief proceeds not more forcefully but more slowly.
Error of Measure
Relief that is too slight merely displaces the pressure and creates the impression of improvement. Relief that is too strong deprives the House of the distinctions that held the line: familiar responses and names depart together with the excess. The work therefore stops not at complete silence, but when the House can once again respond in different ways.
After relief, the rooms are left unfilled for several days, and the result is not discussed inside them. A well-known case in the house of the Three Wells ended in another Shift precisely because the family held a celebratory dinner in the newly cleared gallery and, in a single evening, returned their shared fear to it.
