Heston was an important interwar civil airport west of London, opened in 1929 and closed after the Second World War.
History
Opened as a purpose-built civil airport
Heston opened in July 1929 as a civilian airport rather than a converted military field. It became one of London's important interwar airports.
It closed after the war
Heston ceased airport operations in 1947 as post-war civil traffic consolidated around Heathrow and other larger airports.
Legacy
A pioneering concrete hangar remains
One of Heston's 1929 hangars survives and is Grade II listed. Historic England describes it as Britain's first all-concrete hangar.
