Hounslow Heath briefly served as London's civil air gateway immediately after the First World War.
History
London's first scheduled international services
In 1919 Hounslow Heath handled the first scheduled daily international commercial flights from Britain, making it London's first true international air gateway.
Croydon replaced it in 1920
Hounslow Heath was only a temporary solution. Commercial flying moved to the new Croydon Airport in 1920, and the aerodrome closed soon afterwards.
Legacy
The site returned to heathland
The airfield itself disappeared. Much of the area survives today as Hounslow Heath rather than as an aviation site.
