# Wording

Wording settles last, once the page's structure and claims have. The [lint skill](block:8219) checks voice, links, punctuation, quotations, and prose flow after [the review loop](block:54803).

## Voice

The voice is neutral and concrete. Numbers stand in place of evaluations, and the object is named: “exchanging dinars for forints” rather than “the exchange.” [Wikipedia’s style guide](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style) is a useful reference.

## Links

A link sits on the noun that names its subject in the sentence, not on a mention of the page that explains it. With the link markup removed, the sentence still makes sense.

- `by [the payment rules](page:N)`, not `see [the payments page](page:N)`; the linked title carries no quotation marks.
- A URL that points to one article is anchored on what the article did: the fact-checker Raskrinkavanje [refuted](url) the claim, rather than [Raskrinkavanje](url) refuted it.
- Blocks on the same page carry no links to each other; the reader already has that page open.

## Marks and paragraphs

In English, an em dash appears only where a comma, colon, period, or parentheses would change the meaning. Marks follow the punctuation rules of the language of the text: German commonly uses the dash for an aside, while Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian require it between a noun subject and predicate when the linking verb is absent.

Parallel items stand as a list rather than as consecutive one-line paragraphs, which a reader may take for steps.

## Quoting

Source quotations stand in blockquotes, apart from the surrounding prose; a short example inside a sentence stays in quotation marks. A quotation in another language gives the original first and its translation in italics below it, inside the same blockquote.

```
> "Original sentence in the source's language."
>
> *"Translation into the language of the page."*
```
