# Living Measure

A **living measure** is a craft comparison made in a particular responsive House, where an established pattern of work or sound helps a master and apprentice notice a deviation. It is not an invariant standard: the House, the people and the conditions of observation can change. It must be checked against [cold practice](page:74181).

## Calibration and Doubt

A living measure begins with a familiar, repeatable task and a recorded observer. The master changes one condition at a time, such as the vessel's position or the pause between taps. If the response shifts, the result belongs to that House and occasion, not to every kiln or wall.

## The Master's Mistake

A workshop tale has a master accusing a pupil of losing the measure, only to discover that the table had been moved overnight. The story is told to remind students that a remembered rhythm is not a fixed ruler.
