# Quarter Reckoning

A **quarter reckoning** records shared obligations for drains, stairs, water access and repairs. It counts duties rather than inhabitants: one household may owe work on several routes, while a visitor may use a route without entering the reckoning. The list does not create a [House lineage](page:57229).

## What Is Counted

A reckoning may list a blocked stair, a drain needing clearance and the households that have agreed to send workers. It does not list every person entitled to sleep nearby. When work is disputed, the older entries show who previously accepted the duty, not who owns the ground.

## An Accounting Joke

Porters joke that a quarter's boundary is wherever the repair bill arrives. The joke survives because a household can be charged for a stair it seldom uses.

## How the Account Travels

A reckoning may begin as a board beside a shared stair, where the keeper marks work promised and work done. The entries are copied when a board wears out or a household takes over its duty. A copy is useful but never proves that the original arrangement was fair. A disputed item is kept legible rather than rubbed away: future neighbours need to know what was argued about, not merely which repair was finished.
