# Presutniki

**Presutniki** are people who temporarily live in the [House](page:57029) so that its owners’ absence does not become the beginning of [Cooling](page:57155). They maintain its ordinary rhythm, notice changes, and attend to small everyday tasks. A presutnik does not enter the line and must not pretend to be an owner.

## Presence Without Replacement

The work consists in familiar everyday life, not in constant activity.

> A presutnik is summoned not for conversation, nor for work, nor even because they are close to the house: they are summoned so that the rooms do not acquire that special silence which a house mistakes for departure. And so they sit by the fire while the fire smolders, and at the table while the table is laid, and in the corner while boots stand there—and this work is regarded as work neither by the presutnik nor by the mistress, and no payment is set for it, for such payment would be beyond the means of any house.

A presutnik repeats the rhythm, but not the residents’ personal gestures: imitation would make the House take them for a continuation of the absent person.

## Shift and Routine

Before leaving, the owners name the rooms that must be visited, the tasks that must not be completed, and the signs that call for a master. A shift usually lasts three dolniks; a longer stay creates a habit of presence of its own.

Poor families arrange to take turns with their neighbours. Professional presutniki attend several Houses, but never spend two nights in a row in the same one. In their log, they record deviations rather than events: “the water stayed warm,” “the door waited for the second step.”

## Dangerous Diligence

The one who leaves is not the only bad presutnik. An overly diligent presutnik moves things, answers a call, and settles matters that should await the owner. The House begins to orient itself around them and perceives the residents’ return as a new shift.

If the inner circle responds, a presutnik must retreat to the outer circle and summon the Keeper. Trying to interpret the response without help is considered the gravest professional violation.

## Invisible Labour

The saying “A House cannot be locked; it can only be left in someone’s care” turned the presutnik into a romantic image of loyalty. In the books, it is also poorly paid and dependent labour. A wealthy House preserves itself thanks to someone it will never grant an inner place.

After *Archive Without Wind*, readers debated the presutniki union of Raven-Lest: some editions mention it as a real organization, while others translate the same phrase as an ordinary rota among neighbours.
