# Communities and Roles

**Communities and roles** are ways of living alongside the House without practising a distinct craft. [Wanderers](page:57771) form communities on the road, a [tikhar](page:57772) is defined by their manner of participation, and a [witness](page:57773) or [presutnik](page:57785) takes on a temporary task. These positions can change, and none of them by itself grants membership in the inner circle.

## How People Live Alongside the House

A [witness](page:57773) and a [presutnik](page:57785) take on roles that arise from a task. A witness makes an event acknowledged by people and the line; a presutnik sustains ordinary life in an emptying House. The first role requires remembering and speaking at the right time; the second requires staying, moving about, and noticing change. Neither role by itself grants a place in the inner circle.

One person may hold several such positions in succession or at the same time. A neighbour becomes a presutnik while the owners are away, an experienced tikhar is called as a witness, and a former resident joins the wanderers after losing a house. These names therefore answer not “who is this person forever?” but “how are they connected to the House now, and what is expected of them?”

## Community and a Temporary Task

Wandering creates a lasting way of life with customs of its own. Witnessing and attendance, by contrast, end when the stated task does. A tikhar may be either a member of a community or a temporary role: the word describes a way of leaving room for an answer. The distinction matters: a custom shapes a person’s life, while a task only defines their responsibility in a single event.

## Transitions Between Roles

After losing a house, a resident may become a wanderer; a neighbour, a presutnik; an experienced tikhar, a witness. A transition does not erase earlier obligations. A presutnik who is later called to bear witness must distinguish what they saw as a worker from what they learned afterward. Otherwise, prolonged attendance becomes a false right to speak on behalf of the House.
