# Ash Beneath the Garbitus

**Ash Beneath the Garbitus** is an unfinished late novel by Nareon about the world before the [Rift](page:57387). Three chapters, an outline of seven more, and working cards survive. The book connects the history of the first lost Houses with Seina, the future line, and the Six Wells case, but brings none of these threads to a conclusion.

## Three Layers of the Manuscript

The surviving chapters exist in three typescript layers. The first presents Seina’s story almost without the cycle’s terminology; the second adds pre-Rift names for rooms and crafts; the third consists of corrections in the margins, where later terminology is struck out as too familiar to the people of that time.

This is especially noticeable in the word “garbitus.” It is already present in the early layer, but refers only to the arrangement of things after a fire. In the second, it acquires the spatial meaning familiar from the main novels. In the third, Nareon twice restores the everyday expression, as though he did not want to make the term’s origin too transparent.

Editors quote the layers separately. Combining them into a smooth text would create a finished chapter the author never left behind and would obscure the manuscript’s chief interest: the attempt to write the earlier world without making it speak the language of the later canon.

## Why the Fragments Matter

*Ash* presents the pre-Rift order not as lost perfection but as a system already capable of producing its own catastrophe. Seina prevents the recorded damage, yet the House begins to remember the loss that never occurred. This raises the question: can a correction create a trace of an event stronger than the event itself?

The cards also contain early versions of the future line and the shared memory of displaced residents. It is unclear whether these motifs were meant to explain the Rift or to show several independent causes that people later mistakenly reduced to a single break.

## Plot (Reconstruction)

### What Survives

Three coherent chapters, a rough outline of the remaining seven, and working notes by [Nareon](page:57272) survive from the novel. The plot is reconstructed from these fragments, supplemented by [letters to the editors](block:8275).

<!-- block:57685 -->
### Part One: Before the Rift

The novel reveals the order before the Rift: life in [pre-Rift Houses](page:57115) at the height of their power. It is in this part that [Nareon](page:57272) introduces the [future line](page:57811) as an idea.

In the second surviving chapter, the copyist [Seina](page:57662) finds a record of damage that has not yet occurred and tries to prevent it. The outcome remains ambiguous: the wall does not collapse, but the House begins to remember the loss in another form.

### Part Two: “The First Lost Houses”

According to the plan, the novel was to show the first people to suffer loss—the residents whose Houses [cooled](page:57155) first. The surviving notes directly connect these scenes with [the loss of a home](page:8265) as a theme.

The chapter outline on the first minglings names the [Six Wells case](block:57394): resettled residents bring into the receiving House a memory that soon begins to belong to several families at once. The full chapter does not survive, so it is unknown whether Nareon saw this episode as the beginning of the Rift or as one of its early manifestations.

### What the Manuscript Lacks

The surviving fragments have no conclusion. Fans interpret “Ash” in the title in different ways: [firing](page:57708), not a fire; an [empty arkivit](page:57714) in the garbitus; the last row without a [corrector](page:57763). None of these versions is confirmed.
