# People and Crafts

A person’s relationship to a [House](page:57029) is not exhausted by whether they live under its roof.

## Inhabitants and Specialists

| Position | How it arises | What it allows | What it does not grant by itself |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Membership in a line | induction, birth, or recognised continuation | inner life and participation in decisions | knowledge of a craft |
| [Craft](page:57741) | training and confirmed practice | interpreting or altering a particular aspect of the House | a place even in the outer circle |
| [Role in an event](page:57749) | an invitation or an accepted responsibility | bearing witness, being present, or accompanying a decision | permanent belonging |

A resident may therefore be unable to read the House; a craftsperson may work in it without entering the outer circle; and a witness may receive a limited place and duty without becoming part of the line.

A collator assesses compatibility, a corrector intervenes in the structure, and a master of the wind watches how the consequences move. Wandering, the role of a quiet one, witness, and presence are arranged differently and may change from one event to another. A person’s place is determined by the combination of admission, duty, and memory, not by a single title.

## Who May Speak for the House

The right to speak for the House does not automatically belong to a householder or master. A householder reports the residents’ decision; the Keeper, a stable response of the inner order; a witness, what happened in their presence; and a collator, whether what was recorded is compatible with the active line. One person may combine roles, but every statement must still identify its grounds.

In the dispute at the Salt Courtyard, the mistress said, “The House refused,” although she had heard only an inner door close. The Keeper confirmed the room’s refusal, but not the whole House’s; the witness added that the outer threshold had remained open. After the inquiry, the statement was divided into three records instead of a single final answer.

The world of the cycle thus gives no one a single title as interpreter. The greater the consequence of a decision, the more important it is that different roles not be hidden behind the general phrase “the House said.”

## Temporary Work Crew

A temporary work crew is assembled for complex work: craftspeople, residents, and people with a limited role join it only for the duration of the intervention. The crew does not become a school and creates no common line. It is bound by one obligation: to bring the change to a state in which responsibility for the consequences can once again be divided among the parties concerned.

During relief work on the House at the Clay Bend, the crew included a corrector, a master of the wind, two mistresses, an attendant, and a wanderer who knew the former route through the courtyard. The wanderer received no admission, and the attendant took no part in the decision; without their repeated routes, however, the craftspeople could not have distinguished the old movement from that caused by the work.

After completion, each person signed only their own part of the testimony. This order guards against the convenient legend that one master “repaired the House”: a change is composed of different kinds of knowledge, none of which replaces the others.
