# Unfinished Projects

**Unfinished Projects** by Nareon are two distinct late concepts: the pre-Rift novel “Ash Beneath the Garbitus” and the future-facing “The Corrector’s Late Commentary.” Their materials were partly kept together, but they differ in their characters, direction of time, and manuscript form.

## Two Late Projects

After the core five books, [H. K. Nareon](page:57272) worked on at least two unfinished projects. “[Ash Beneath the Garbitus](page:57668)” looked back toward the world before the Rift and survives in several connected chapters. “[The Corrector’s Late Commentary](page:57669)” was conceived as a sixth book that would revisit the events of the core cycle from the future.

Both projects are known from an incomplete corpus of manuscripts, notes, and letters, so later retellings often conflate them. Their different working titles, time frames, and descriptions of their structure rule out treating them as a single novel. At the same time, individual cards—especially notes on later terminology and the future storyline—cannot yet be confidently assigned to either corpus.

## How the Materials Are Distinguished

The “Ash” materials form a draft manuscript: the same characters pass from chapter to chapter, the sheets carry the author’s numbering, and the plot outline continues interrupted scenes. The “Commentary” has no such corpus. It is reconstructed from letters, interviews, editors’ excerpts, and a few terminology cards with no reliable sequence.

The main criterion is the direction of time. A text in which a pre-Rift character first encounters knowledge of the future is assigned to “Ash.” A note in which a later corrector explains an already familiar episode from the five-book cycle is associated with the “Commentary.” Cards without a narrative frame are left between the projects and are not used to complete the plot.

This distinction does not prove that Nareon never transferred material from one project to the other. It merely prevents a reader’s reconstruction from presenting a convenient unified “sixth novel” as a surviving book by the author.

## What Remains Unknown

It has not been established whether a continuous draft of the “Commentary” existed or whether Nareon intended to transfer cards from “Ash” into it. Unknown sheets are not assigned to projects on terminology alone: a single motif could have been used in both. Disputed cards are therefore kept separately, and the gap is not filled with the most convenient reconstruction.
