# Shift

**Shift** is a change in the internal order of the [House](page:57029), in which what has been retained remains in place but begins to apply to the wrong people, rooms, or decisions. It is not just any change, nor is it necessarily destruction. The danger of a Shift lies in the preservation of a recognizable form: the House continues to respond, but the meaning of its response has already shifted.

## What Is Retained Out of Place

The first sign of a Shift is the right action in the wrong relationship. A room greets its owner as a guest, a family possession returns to the wrong person, a familiar answer arises in response to an adjacent question.

> You cannot hear a Shift, just as you cannot hear your own heart change its course; and only later, when the room that once knew your morning begins to greet you as if for the first time, and the mistress averts her eyes not from you but from the place where you once stood, will you understand that the House has already shifted, and that neither you nor the one who has remembered this house longer than you can return it to its former line.

A Shift differs from [garbitus](page:57174) in that it involves a verifiable change in relationships: garbitus may be a premonition, whereas here it is already possible to show exactly what has come to apply in the wrong place.

## Where It Begins

Most often, a Shift arises after a crude alteration, a botched initiation, forced admission, or prolonged overstrain. There can also be a gradual displacement: a family repeats a convenient exception for years until the House begins to regard it as the rule. By then, no one can name the moment it began.

Inspectors look for the first discrepancy, not the most conspicuous damage. If a staircase leads to the wrong place, the cause may be the long-ago relocation of a key, an invitation closed incorrectly, or a name left in a room after the person departed.

## Correction and Outcomes

An attempt is made to halt a minor Shift by relieving the strain and restoring boundaries. Returning everything “to the way it was” is dangerous: the former order may already have vanished, and mechanical repetition creates a second error on top of the first. A [Corrector](page:57763) first separates stable relationships from an accidentally preserved form.

An unchecked Shift can turn into [Contamination](page:57258), break the line, or hasten [Cooling](page:57155). Sometimes it becomes a condition for [Awakening](page:57154): the House learns to act within the new order. This is why different schools describe the same outcome as either damage or a dangerous adaptation.
