# Cooling **Cooling** is the gradual loss of a House’s ability to bind people’s presence to accumulated memory. It begins neither with cold nor necessarily with emptiness: the House still repeats its familiar responses, but grows less able to distinguish whom it is answering and why. The final state is a [cooled house](page:57267), where nothing new enters the line anymore. ## Less of a Listener Cooling is noticed by the disappearance of distinctions: the door opens the same way for the owner and a guest, the evening sound does not change after a resident returns, and a new object remains foreign for months. > The House cooled as ashes cool after the night: not at once, not in a single hour, but as each morning there was a little less in it that could be heard, and each evening a little less that could hear; and winter came, in which it ceased to answer altogether, and there was no anger in this, and no hurt, but only that there was nothing left with which to answer, and no one left to wait for an answer. > > — [Archive Without Wind](page:57363) ## Causes and False Signs A long absence of living people weakens the circles, but not every empty House is Cooling: a stable line is sometimes sustained by objects, an unfinished obligation, or a regular return. Rapid Cooling is caused by a severe Shift, a failed induction, or the forcible disconnection of memory. Cold, silence, and dust prove nothing by themselves. What must be tested is the ability to respond to a new distinction. If the House recognizes the familiar but does not change for the sake of a living person, the process has already begun. ## Presence and the Limit of Rescue [Attendants](page:57785) preserve the rhythm of daily life while the owners are away, but they do not replace the line. Their task is to keep silence from becoming the new order and to notice weakening responses in time. If Cooling is caused by a break in the line, presence alone merely postpones the outcome. The House is then unloaded, dangerous circles are closed, and a decision is made about which memories to carry into the Archive.
