# Awakening

**Awakening**, called *Waking* in Nareon’s English text, is a state of the [House](page:57029) in which disparate responses coalesce into a stable preference of the whole. The House begins to coordinate its rooms, circles, and line on its own, but this does not turn it into a human mind.

## From Response to Preference

A strong or unusual response does not yet amount to Awakening. It begins when different parts of the House choose the same direction without any new human action: the outer door delays the same people, an inner room keeps a place for them, and the line rearranges memory so that this choice recurs after circumstances change.

> The House awoke at the hour when no one had permitted it; and Kakhenor stood in the middle of the room, and heard the walls joining into a single breath, and understood that this breath no longer had either master or inhabitant—there was only the house itself, choosing who would be here, and this will was older than all who had ever called upon it.

The preference need not be hostile. An awakened House may protect an inhabitant, maintain a safe route, or reject an old error. The danger lies in the response’s autonomy: even a beneficial choice can no longer be revoked by a single command from the master or by mending one seam.

## What Changes in the House

Before Awakening, coherence is sustained by the repetition of life: inhabitants return, rooms recognize the routine, and the line connects the present decision to earlier ones. Afterward, the House can continue the chosen order without the original participant. It not only remembers an invitation but opens the connected passages itself; it not only retains a name but distinguishes when someone is trying to misuse it.

Awakening also changes space. Rooms begin coordinating distance, sound, and direction of movement around a single preference. The route to a person may grow shorter, a closed inner circle may manifest in several places, and the courtyard may respond to an event in a distant room. These changes are stable but not arbitrary: the House acts through the means of its own structure and accumulated memory.

This does not imply human speech or full self-awareness. The House does not explain its reasons, communicate new knowledge of the outside world, or form intentions beyond its connections. The words “will” and “choice” describe the coherence of the response, not a personality hidden within the walls.

## Preconditions and Treatment

Awakening may follow a long period of accumulation, a severe [Shift](page:57259), or [Contamination](page:57258), but none of these states leads to it automatically. An old, stable House may awaken without damage; an infected one may disintegrate or cool without ever gathering the error into a single response. There is only one common precondition: its parts are already capable of sustaining one preference through one another.

Ordinary mending is dangerous after Awakening. The House interprets a change to one wall through the overall order and may compensate elsewhere. The limits of the preference are therefore tested first: whom and what it distinguishes, whether it persists after the inhabitants leave, and which parts do not participate. People are removed from areas where the response cannot be interpreted safely, and only then is the line treated as a whole.

The books offer no general rule as to whether an awakened House should be preserved. Some characters consider an autonomous response the House’s maturity; others, the loss of the human right to shelter. The practical question is narrower: does the established preference allow for dissent, departure, and change among the living? A House that can choose but cannot let go remains dangerous, regardless of whether its choice is sound.
