# Tickets and payment

Airport transport uses several ticketing systems. Contactless payment is convenient on many London services, but not every airport rail or coach journey works like a normal TfL trip.

## Use tap-in payment selectively

For [Heathrow](page:532), Oyster and contactless work on the Piccadilly line and Elizabeth line, and contactless is also widely supported on London rail. Outside the TfL network the rules differ by operator and destination: do not assume that a bank card can simply be tapped at every airport station.

## Airport rail is not one fare system

[Gatwick](page:533), [Stansted](page:534), [Luton](page:535) and [Southend](page:537) use National Rail or dedicated airport links rather than the Underground. Advance tickets, flexible rail tickets, contactless pay-as-you-go and coach fares can price the same journey very differently.

## Compare the whole journey

When comparing a cheap flight, add the cost of the airport trip in both directions. A fare that saves £20 on the flight can lose that advantage if it requires a premium train, a late-night taxi or an extra hotel night.
