# Ground Transport

London airports vary widely in how they connect to central London. The fastest option is not always the best value, and the best route depends on where in London you're starting or ending.

## Coaches

Often cheaper than rail and useful for very early or late flights, but more exposed to road traffic. Especially relevant when comparing [Stansted](page:534), [Luton](page:535), and [Gatwick](page:533) for budget trips.

## Taxis and private transfers

Convenient for groups, heavy luggage, late arrivals, or destinations not well served by rail. Usually more expensive and can be slower during peak road traffic. Often most practical for late arrivals at [Heathrow](page:532), [Gatwick](page:533), [Luton](page:535), or [Southend](page:537), depending on destination.

## Planning tips

- Check terminal, not just airport — especially at [Heathrow](page:532) and [Gatwick](page:533).
- Compare total door-to-door time, not only train time.
- Leave extra time for security, walking, inter-terminal transfers, and ticket barriers.
- For early departures, verify first train times before booking flights — especially for [Stansted](page:534), [Luton](page:535), and [Southend](page:537).
- Use [Choosing the Right Airport](page:539) when transport cost or journey time could change which airport is best.
- Check [Tickets and payment](page:62884) before assuming Oyster or contactless works for the whole journey.
- For a flight connection that changes airports, read [Airport-to-airport transfers](page:62885) and leave a large buffer.
- For departures at dawn or arrivals late at night, plan with [Early and late flights](page:62886).
